about

!It’s 2014 and Polly has been celebrating ten exhilarating years since the release of her startling shed-recorded debut ‘Scissors In My Pocket’ on One Little Indian (home to Bjork) with a special jamboree-of-a-gig at London’s St Pancras Old Church and this, her latest release.

‘The Small Feat Of My Reverie’ is the eagerly anticipated sister-album to her stunning 2012 album ‘Leaves From The Family Tree’, funded by another successful crowd-funding campaign by fans who will die for the songstress who one admirer described on Twitter as a ‘folk titan’.

This sister-album thing is something of a firm tradition now for Paulusma; the titles of sister-albums (2004’s ‘Scissors In My Pocket’ had its ‘Cosmic Rosy Spine Kites’; 2007’s ‘Fingers & Thumbs’ had ‘Fights & Numbers’) are always anagrams of their main-release sibling, and through their alternative versions of the songs they reveal something of Paulusma’s songwriting and production processes.

The best moment? Picture Paulusma, heavily pregnant with child number one, sitting in the stalls of London’s Sadlers Wells Theatre watching her brave 8-year-old cousin compete in a national ballet competition. A visiting US ballerina is about to perform while the judges deliberate. The music strikes up... and Paulusma freezes - why do those strings sound so familiar? As the voice rings out she realises why - it’s her - and it’s the a cappella/strings version of ‘Anywhere From Here’ from ‘Cosmic Rosy Spine Kites’ that the young dancer is pirouetting to. If art is a relay race, here is the baton in mid-flight. And Paulusma’s young cousin? Well, she decided Paulusma was ‘totally sick’. Or, to translate that into the parlance of an older generation - very, very cool.
